Future-Proof Your Child’s Vision with Myopia Management
At Look Optometry, we recognize the challenges myopia, or nearsightedness, presents for children—from difficulties in seeing the classroom board to missing out on distant sights during family trips. If your child often squints or struggles to focus, it might indicate impaired vision. That’s why we offer Myopia Management—a proactive and comprehensive approach to not only correct your child’s vision but also protect it for the future.
Why Aren’t Glasses Enough for Myopia?
Myopia is a condition where the eye itself changes shape, and the blurriness that a person with nearsightedness sees is due to light focusing in front of the retina, not on it. Glasses help fix vision — they make light focus properly on the retina — but they do not interact with your eyeballs! Which means they cannot help slow or prevent the eyes from continuing to get worse as your child grows. Without a proper myopia treatment plan, your child’s vision will continue to degrade, requiring stronger prescriptions over time and put them at a greater risk of developing eye diseases as an adult.
Myopia Management: Let’s Get to the Root of the Problem!
A proper myopia management program slows myopia’s progression by helping the eye hold its shape. The goal is to correct their vision now and prevent their prescription from continuing to degrade at the same rate — which allows your child to focus on school, sports, and social life without being held back by their vision.
Our Myopia Treatment is Uniquely Yours
The plan we create for your child is unique to their needs, in every sense: our team looks at their medical history, current prescription, lifestyle, and hobbies to determine what combination of treatments they need to be successful. We have a lot of tricks up our sleeve, but some of our favorite treatment options are listed below.
Ortho-K
Ortho-K lenses are like braces for your eyes — they’re worn at night, and this hard, breathable lens helps the eye hold its shape. The lens physically cupping the eye helps slow down myopia’s progression, and lets your child see with clear vision all day without the need for eyeglasses or contacts.
MiSight
Worn during the day, MiSight lenses are soft contacts that are specifically designed for myopia control, and are FDA approved to slow myopia’s progression in children starting at ages 8-12. MiSight lenses are daily disposable lenses, which means your kiddo can lose a lens without causing you a headache.
Atropine Drops
Low doses of atropine in drop form have been shown to slow the rate that myopia progresses over time. When coupled with other treatment options, atropine drops are a very effective tool, and easy for kids to use on their own.
Why Choose Look Optometry for Myopia Management
Look — we don’t want to send a child who has nearsightedness off with a pair of glasses; it’s a temporary band aid that requires constant upkeep as your child continues to grow. We’re here to make things easier and less worrisome for you as a parent. Dr. Stybel and many of our staff are parents, we strive so hard for your kids because we know how we’d want to protect our own.
